• The History of John C. Fremont

Fremont Elementary School was built in 1937. Our school is named after an American explorer who was a military officer and mapmaker of the American West. Do you know Mr. Fremont also taught mathematics aboard the U.S. Warship, Natchez?

Fremont was then commissioned as a second lieutetant of topographical engineers for the U.S. Army. He explored the Pacific Northwest and crossed into Nevada and California, making his way to Sutter's Fort on the Sacramento River in March of 1844.  John C. Fremont ran for office and was a firm opponent of slavery. He also served under President Lincoln as an officer in the Civil War.

John C. Fremont was a leader and helped to create the California we know today.
